Curious: The Final Journey for the Class of 2013

If ever there was a time to be proud of the achievements of our students it was last Friday. Curious 2013 Curious13 is the most ambitious collaborative event the Atrium building has seen and it certainly didn’t disappoint. A showcase of some of the best work our students have produced, it opened with a private viewing which adopted the theme of an airport departure lounge. Our undergraduates will soon be taking off on a new journey of course, one we hope will see them fulfill their career ambitions and put to good use all that we’ve taught them in the last three years. What better way to begin than with a chance to show some invited guests from industry, as well as family and friends, all that they’ve achieved. Continue reading

‘Politics has to be about people’ – tackling the democratic deficit in Wales

Welsh politicians worried by the low level of public interest in their work have been told they need to make politics more interesting and relevant to people. Representatives of the media told a conference in Cardiff Bay that there was no point in shooting the messenger. Continue reading

Getting his voice heard: CJ Edwards makes the grade

HAVING just completed a two week live television project as part of final year undergraduate assessments, I can’t say I’ve had much time to tune into anything other than Exposure TV over the last few weeks. I potentially had a bit of catching up to do this weekend. I’ve always been a big fan of BBC One’s The Voice and I’ve just become an even bigger one after discovering that a former student has scooped the last slot on the show. Continue reading

Where are the journalists Wales needs?

If the job of journalists is to hold the powerful to account, it’s clearly important to have enough of them – and of the right type.  The late Patrick Hannan was one such – a man who grilled Welsh politicians for decades.  At the second annual lecture in his honour, important questions were raised about the state of Welsh journalism today. Continue reading

Some of our final year undergraduates with ITV’s Andrea Byrne & Jonathan Hill

As one door closes … another one opens. Exposure Radio is done and dusted for this year, and we move on to Exposure TV. This is the first year the university has run this Major Broadcast module for final year undergraduate students interested in television. We’re building on the successful foundations set by the radio course and hoping that the television version will be as challenging, inspiring and beneficial to those keen to work in the industry. Continue reading

Inspiration is what you need to succeed

By Julie Kissick

As an undergraduate, I was fascinated by the 19th century novelist George Eliot, (aka Mary Ann Evans). Her unconventional life, strength of character and dogged determination to do things her way inspired me. Eliot was a woman ahead of her time. Like all great authors, she divides opinion. To me she was a brilliant bohemian, an insightful writer who believed in the authenticity of her characters. She understood the people she wrote about. She knew what motivated them. Her writing was a revelation – as was the lecturer who taught me about her. His passion for the literature of that period was contagious. Our tutorial groups were the highlight of my week because inevitably I came away wanting to read more, learn more and understand more. The insatiable appetite was ever present. Continue reading

Exposure is Back!

For the third year running January was a month of madness. Nothing to do with the post-Christmas blues or the inclement weather, but the preparations for and arrival of another three week live broadcast project named by the class of 2011: Exposure Radio. Continue reading
